EDITOR’S LETTER

To readers of For the Record 2020,

We hope you are as captivated with the stories and perspectives of these incredible students as we were.

We searched for students that had a presence on this campus and have made a lasting impact on the community here. It wasn’t important to us if these students were at the top of their academic programs or held the most prestigious internships in their time here. These students were selected for their unique passions and accomplishments, and Marist wouldn’t quite be the same if they had chosen a different institution.

If students at Marist can see that one of their peers was able achieve something significant to them, overcome difficult obstacles, and establish a lasting legacy, they will be empowered to do the same. Our role models are all around us. Their stories will make you laugh and they will make you cry.

The For the Record staff wanted our twenty-four individuals to represent a cross-section of the Marist community. These twenty-four students were selected from a nomination form that was distributed throughout the academic schools

The array of interests and achievements was astonishing: app developers, artists, government employees, musicians, and many more are featured here. Students from far and wide have called Marist their home; our recipients are from Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Africa, Nepal, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, California, and of course, Poughkeepsie.

To embody the colorful cultures cultivated here, we went with a vibrant, color-focused direction aesthetically. Colorful backgrounds and a lighting rig with gels were used for the photography, and vivid graphic art was produced to convey significant aspects of each recipient’s story. Active members of the Marist Circle, Centerfield, NSAC, and Marist College Television assisted in the project, showcasing what true collaboration can accomplish. Several of the current staff have been involved with the For the Record since its inception, including Chun-Li “Ken” Huang, Tara Guaimano, and Raphael Beretta.

COVID-19 has changed the scope of the project; we initially had a gallery exhibition and print release planned. We hope the ability to release our stories in a digital format provides needed hope and levity in these challenging times.

To all that have supported the project in this year’s iteration, we offer our sincere gratitude.

We thank the Admissions Department, Marist College Marketing, and Student Activities for their unwavering support and advising throughout the development process, especially Julia Fishman, Kent Rinehart, Elizabeth Tavarez, Carlo deJesus, and Bob Lynch.

We thank every faculty member and student that nominated nearly two hundred students for inclusion in the project. In assistance with nominating and vetting, we especially thank Deborah Dicaprio, James Snyder, Mary Stone, Martin Schaffer, Lyn Lepre, Larry Singleton, Iris Ruiz-Grech, Karen Tomkins-Tinch, and Robin Torres.

The credibility of For the Record and the legacy the 2020 edition was built upon would not be possible without the hard work and visionary foresight of Bernadette Hogan and Goodman Lepota, the student founders of the project. To every past and current member of the For the Record Team, you are truly the giants whose shoulders we are standing upon.

We also thank Dean Snyder of Snyder Printing, Rebecca Brown, Melissa Halverson, Rebecca Sellmeyer, Michele Williams, and Julie Cirilli for their help in assisting production.

Additionally, we want to applaud the massive effort from the editorial and design staff. Hundreds of hours were put in by our staff to showcase these 24 individuals in vibrant, inventive ways

Additional thanks to President Dennis Murray, Kathy McNulty, Roda Mohamed, and Chris Mobeck.

Sincerely,

Raphael Beretta ‘20, Executive Director

Kenneth Guillaume ‘20, Editorial Director
