TO THOSE WHO INSPIRE US TO PUSH BOUNDARIES

OUR STORY

For The Record is an initiative that was established in 2016 by Marist College’s student newspaper the Marist Circle. The idea of the initiative was introduced by then Editor in Chief Bernadette Hogan ’17 and Creative Director, Goodman Lepota ‘18. The initiative was created to highlight inspiring stories of students from Marist College. It was presented in three different ways; through photography displayed at a gallery exhibition, an web-online version, and weekly magazines. It featured 74 student’s stories. The success of the initiative came from attracting more than 400 gallery visitors. This included having more than 40,000 unique visitors on the website and engaged up to 3000 student newsletter subscribers.

a letter from the editor

BY nicole iuzzolino

As the fifth edition of For The Record comes to close, I took ample amounts of time to reflect on my journey as Executive Director of For The Record.

When I started my sophomore year as an editorial writer, I was astonished by the captivating individuals who walked the Marist College grounds like I did. I interviewed four individuals who shared stories that made us cry, that made us share a laugh and that made us smile, knowing that their journeys and their accomplishments were far from over.

My junior year as an editorial writer faced many difficulties. It was the year the pandemic was still in full-swing, making videography and photography difficult and in-person interviews impossible. However, we yet again created 24 stories that portrayed the Changemakers that not only make up the Marist campus but the community that surrounds it. Despite great adversity, we were able to once again share the stories of those who created change in their own communities, and stood up for what they believed in, no matter how much pushback they received.

Now, as a senior at Marist College, as well as the Executive Director of For The Record, I am more impressed with what my predecessors have accomplished than ever before. Coordinating interviews, photography, videography and even elements as small as font size and color have all been integral to what you see in front of you. Creating a project such as this is not an easy feat, especially as a graduating college student. When there seemed like there were endless roadblocks in our way, we somehow still hurdled over each and every one.

Similarly, our 10 honorees faced their own battles and roadblocks that they too never thought they would overcome. Yet, their stories that we share with you today are of resilience. They are ones that show you how to live life fearlessly, demonstrate how to lend a helping hand in times of need and how to smile even on the cloudiest of days.

It is an absolute honor to present to you these 10 honorees who have moved us and given us the opportunity to share their stories with you all.

I thank you for taking the time to soak in what our nominees wanted to share, as they are truly anything but the ordinary.
